Lenor: Our commitment to safety

Safety is the number one priority for Lenor and our parent company, P&G. Our team of more than 500 safety and compliance experts ensures every ingredient, product, and packaging undergoes rigorous scientific risk assessment before it ever reaches your home. This article explains Lenor’s stringent safety process in detail, providing full transparency so you can make informed choices. .

Our commitment to legal and scientific rigour
Safety is not a choice; it is a legal obligation. Lenor’s adherence to the legal frameworks of the EU and its member states provides demonstrable proof of the safety and quality of every product we bring to the market. The table below shows the core EU regulations governing our products:
| Regulation | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) | We assess every chemical ingredient for safety and follow strict rules on its use. |
| CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging) | We determine a classification for each product that helps define the safety warnings and advice, to help you use the products safely. |
| Detergents Regulation (EU) 2026/405 | The surfactants used in our products are biodegradable. We also adhere to labelling and safe use requirements. |
| Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD) | We design our packaging to follow recyclability requirements and are continuously working to reduce waste and increase the use of recycled materials. |
| Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD) | Our products are designed to be compatible with municipal wastewater treatment systems across the EU. |
| Regulation on Deforestation-free Products (EUDR) | We are committed to responsible sourcing and ensure our ingredients and packaging materials come from deforestation-free sources. |
| Unfair Commercial Practices Directive (UCPD) (2005/29/EC) | The claims we make about our products are accurate and not misleading. |
| Green Claims Directive (proposed, amending UCPD) | Any environmental claims we make are backed by verifiable scientific evidence. |
Our four-step ingredient safety process
Lenor assesses ingredient safety via a four-step risk assessment process originally developed by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (National Research Council, National Academy Press, 1983) and updated in 2009 by the Environmental Protection Agency. This globally recognized methodology is built on the crucial distinction between “hazard”, “exposure”, and “risk.”
- Hazard: The intrinsic property of a substance to potentially cause a harmful effect.
- Exposure: The amount, duration and route of contact with a substance under real-world conditions.
- Risk: The likelihood that a harmful effect will actually occur, based on both the hazard and the specific exposure.
Our entire safety process is designed to apply the principle: Risk = Hazard x Exposure. Put simply, the dose defines the poison. Here’s how we do it:
- A thorough review of the science: we begin by collecting all available safety information about an ingredient from our own testing or information from our suppliers, published scientific literature, and public databases. We check for relevant human and environmental endpoints and determine safe exposure levels for use.
- The identification of potential hazards: most ingredients have a long history of safe use, but new ingredients or new ways of using them require extra care. Our scientists identify any potential hazards and make sure any testing required by government authorities is completed before the ingredient is used in a product.
- The assessment of exposure: Understanding how people actually use our products is critical. Lenor have years of experience serving billions of consumers worldwide, and research centers around the globe that study real-life consumer habits and calculate how much of each ingredient people may be exposed to during normal use.
- The evaluation of risk: By combining the ingredients’ properties with expected exposure, our experts assess the overall risk. We then apply a large safety margin – typically 100 to 1,000 times below the level that is considered safe.
A physical hazard assessment of the packaging is also conducted to ensure that the correct packaging is used based upon local regulations and any hazards associated with the formulation.
Finally, our scientists’ work doesn’t stop there. If new information emerges that could impact the risk assessment - such as updated information on an ingredient’s intrinsic properties or changes in product use - our safety experts reassess the risk to ensure the product continues to meet our high safety standards.
Spotlight on perfume safety
The safety of perfumes in Lenor products is carefully assessed using International Fragrance Association (IFRA) standards, which are based on the following critical scientific publications: Api et al., 2008, Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology; Api and Vey 2008, Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology; Api et al., 2020, Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology. IFRA represents the global fragrance industry and works to ensure that fragrances are safe and beneficial for consumers. IFRA can ban, limit or set specific rules for fragrance ingredients based on the available safety and exposure information through the IFRA Standards. Lenor fully complies with these standards and where needed, our safety and compliance experts perform additional assessments to ensure products are safe to be used as intended.
Our commitment to environmental safety
Lenor products are not harmful to the environment when used and disposed of as intended. Because our products go down the drain after use, we ensure our products are compatible with wastewater management systems.
FAQs
Are Lenor products safe for the skin?
Yes. All our formulations go through a thorough human safety review by our in-house experts and are assessed to be safe for intended use, looking at all the ingredients in the formula and how people will interact with the product.
Consumers looking for additional skin safety reassurance can consider:
- Lenor Sensitive fabric softener, which carries the ECARF (European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation) certification; an independent seal given to products proven suitable for people with allergies or sensitive skin after rigorous assessment and testing (see list here and qualifying criteria for detergents here).
- Lenor Light scent beads, which are specifically designed for consumers who prefer milder scent characteristics and feature a formula that is dermatologically tested and accredited by the Skin Health Alliance.
How do I check for specific allergens in a Lenor product?
In compliance with the European CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging) and Detergents Regulation (EU) 2026/405, allergens are clearly listed in the ingredients section on every product label. The detailed product ingredient list can be found online at: https://www.info-pg.com/.
Are the ingredients in Lenor products natural or synthetic?
Lenor products contain ingredients that are both naturally and synthetically derived. We conduct the same thorough safety assessments for both to ensure they are used at safe levels and responsibly sourced.
Are Lenor products tested on animals?
No. Lenor does not test products or ingredients on animals anywhere in the world, unless explicitly required by law. In fact, the brand owners of Lenor, P&G, have played an active role in ending animal testing, see blog here: https://us.pg.com/blogs/pg-ending-animal-testing-together/
